That “just rest and eat chocolate” advice? It’s only a small bit of what you really should be doing.
Why movement actually helps
Light workouts like walking, yoga, gentle stretching do real physiological work during your period. They boost blood circulation to your pelvic muscles, which helps ease the tension causing your cramps. They also trigger endorphins, your body’s natural painkillers, so you feel calmer and less crampy without popping a pill.
Skip the cardio and heavy lifting for these few days though. High-intensity training can actually make fatigue and cramping worse. This is a “low and steady” window, not a “push harder” one.
What if my cramps are really bad?
If you’re someone who gets knocked flat by period pain every month, movement alone won’t fix it. Start with your plate first — balanced, anti-inflammatory nutrition matters more than people realize when it comes to period pain. Once your nutrition is dialed in, pair it with daily walking. Together, they work far better than either alone.
Don’t skip movement on your period — just switch gears. Walk, stretch, flow through some yoga, and if cramps are severe, fix your food first. Your body will thank you.
